I am an experienced communications professional with 13 years of public relations experience and nearly a decade as a newspaper reporter. I’m passionate about public education and helping to create equal access to opportunity for every learner.
Experience
In the more than 12 years I have been with SDCOE, I have consistently embraced new challenges and leadership opportunities. This included building a team of four employees to oversee the organization’s internal communication, engagement, professional development, and event planning efforts.
I’m proud of the work I’ve done to provide consistent, transparent, and timely messaging to employees, the community, and the media. This work highlighted the great things going on at local schools and helped build trust in public education.
Commitment to Inclusion
I have expanded the employee communication program at SDCOE to include short-term strategies as well as an extensive long-term strategic communications plan based on years’ worth of data. All that work has been done with a strong focus on inclusion and feedback to make sure that all employees can participate and feel seen and heard. This effort includes the recently launched My North Star Journey initiative, which gives employees across the organization different ways to connect with each other and SDCOE’s goal to reduce systemic income disparities.
Skills
In addition to overseeing employee communications and engagement, I have years of experience with research, media relations, emergency response, website creation, leading committees, event planning, speechwriting, professional development, project management, and consultation on public relations planning and strategy. Before going into public relations, I was a newspaper reporter for a decade, which helped me build a thorough understanding of media needs and a reverence for deadlines.
Leadership
I have embraced every opportunity I could find to take on leadership roles, including serving as president of the board of the Laurels for Leaders nonprofit that recognizes ASB presidents, the County Office of Education’s management employee association board, and a local chapter of Toastmasters, which focuses on improving public speaking skills.
